The challenge
Panim set out to address the growing issue of social isolation among the elderly — a problem affecting approximately 25% of seniors, with serious implications for their mental and physical health. The challenge was to design a digital product that could engage elderly users meaningfully, encourage them to share their life stories, and generate valuable health-related insights. The experience needed to be accessible, intuitive, and sensitive to an audience that may have limited digital literacy, while also creating trust and emotional resonance.
The role
In this project, I was responsible for designing a user-centered experience tailored to elderly users. My tasks included:
- Researching and analyzing the needs, limitations, and behaviors of older adults to inform design decisions.
- Designing simple, intuitive user flows that reduce friction and make interactions with the AI as natural as possible.
- Creating prototypes that could be tested during the MVP phase with 300 elderly Israelis, ensuring usability and emotional engagement.
- Establishing accessible design standards such as clear typography, larger touch targets, and simplified navigation.
- Collaborating closely with the product and AI teams to ensure that the conversational interface felt warm, respectful, and easy to use.
The solution
We designed an accessible, conversational platform where elderly users could comfortably share their life stories with an interactive AI, creating a space for reflection and connection. The interface was crafted to feel intuitive and safe, using clear design patterns and accessibility best practices to meet the needs of older adults.
In parallel, the system gathered valuable data that could serve both as a rich archive of personal histories and as a potential early-warning system for health-related issues. Panim became a tool not only for personal expression but also for combatting loneliness and contributing to the well-being of elderly users, laying the groundwork for future continuous learning and potential early interventions.
Project currently in the Birdhouse accelerator program. Thanks to Raphael Rubens, Uri Cohen, Nir Halm and Noam Blitz for trusting me.
The impact
Panim went from idea to a validated, accessible MVP, and kept growing from there.
- Prototypes tested with older adults during the MVP phase, checking both usability and emotional engagement.
- Accessibility standards (clear typography, larger touch targets, simpler navigation) built in for users with limited digital literacy.
- A warm conversational interface that makes talking to an AI feel natural and safe.
- Accepted into the Birdhouse accelerator program.
- After the initial phases, the product evolved into MemoMate, an AI calling platform for senior-living communities, and then into Candid. The conversational foundations designed here carried straight into both.
