The challenge
Bumble for Friends (BFF) was being launched as a standalone app to help people form meaningful friendships — a new brand offering within the Bumble ecosystem. The timeline was incredibly tight: the team had just four months to design, build, and launch the product. To support this ambitious schedule, we needed a design system that would enable rapid delivery while ensuring consistency with the broader Bumble brand. The key challenge was balancing speed with quality — delivering a robust design foundation for BFF, without reinventing the wheel, while allowing the app to have a distinct personality yet feel unmistakably Bumble.
The role
I was responsible for building and delivering the design system for BFF at record speed, working closely with design and engineering partners. My role included:
- Strategically reusing the foundations of Bumble’s design system (Cosmos) to accelerate delivery: maintaining shared components, design patterns, and semantic tokens, ensuring brand consistency.
- Defining the minimal set of differences required to express the unique personality of BFF — primarily through component tokens for things like color applications and theming adjustments.
- Establishing documentation that made it easy for teams to understand where BFF differed from Bumble and where it was consistent.
- Supporting the team throughout the compressed timeline, ensuring smooth integration and adoption across iOS, Android, and web.
- Tracking adoption and readiness metrics, ensuring all core components were fully documented and implemented ahead of launch.
The solution
We delivered a fully functional, documented design system for Bumble For Friends in just four months, enabling the product to launch on time. The key aspects of the solution were:
- Reuse of Bumble’s system foundations: BFF shared 100% of the underlying components and semantic tokens from Love, which meant everything from layout to accessibility standards was inherited by default.
- Differentiation through component tokens: we applied brand-specific theming (e.g., colors, illustrations, visual treatments) at the component token level to give BFF a distinct look and feel while minimizing redundant work.
- Lean, focused documentation: clear guidance was provided to designers and developers, highlighting what was shared from Bumble and where BFF-specific overrides existed.
- Close collaboration and iteration with engineering teams, ensuring implementation quality across platforms.
- Ongoing measurement of system usage and readiness, ensuring the system was robust and extensible from day one.
The result was a scalable design system tailored for BFF that met an aggressive launch deadline without sacrificing quality. By building on the strength of the Bumble design system, we were able to maintain brand consistency, ensure accessibility and performance, and give BFF its own personality with a minimal footprint — all within just four months.
The impact
The system did its main job: it got BFF to launch on time without cutting corners.
- A complete, documented design system delivered in 4 months, in time for launch.
- 100% of Cosmos components and semantic tokens reused, so BFF inherited layout and accessibility standards from day one.
- BFF’s own personality was expressed only through component tokens, keeping the brand-specific layer small and easy to maintain.
- Shipped across iOS, Android and web from a single source of truth.
- Bumble For Friends was named Google Play Best of 2023 — Users’ Choice, Best for Fun.
